365 Days of Laughter

I have a New Yorker cartoon 365 day calendar. I love ripping the cartoons off, sometimes they actually make my day. Granted, not all of them are funny, but some of them are awesome. (I swear, the cartoons are half the reason I buy the magazine. Ahem, I mean, no--I love the magazine. It's a veritable symphony of literary genius.) The best bit is that you can always find cartoons that apply to anyone--usually when I rip one off and have a giggle, I'm thinking of someone. And so it ends up being the perfect thing to paste in a card! I mean, half the fun of a card is the stuff you can stick inside it--New Yorkers are absolutely perfect for this. These are a few of my favourites I collected from May-September 2009 (it's always great when you've been away for a while and then you get to come back and rip 60 of them off. So invigorating.)...
Reminds me of one of my best guy friends. I just look at it and think he would say something like that. Or worse.
Ditto for this one. Haha. ;)
Sorry you can't read this one very well, but it says...

Hot Dog Stand Guy: You know, I 've got an MBA from Harvard. I'm selling these as a hoot!
Guy Buying Hotdog: Well, ha-ha-HA, because I'm only eating this ironically.

As someone who comes from a small liberal arts college that loves being pretentious and has half its population hail from New York City, I feel this is very appropriate. And true. ;)
This is hilarious, especially since I was a praying mantis last year for Hallowe'en. Although I was definitely not as epic as she is.

Extremely Wishful Thinking

I just sent this card to my friend--I think it is undyingly perfect for any girl. Does it not sum up the wants, wishes and desires of every average female in North America? In the entire world? Interestingly enough, the woman who said this, Zsa Zsa Gabor, had nine husbands, seven of whom she divorced and one of which is annuled. Shockingly, she's still with her final husband, at age 92. They've been married for 23 years. Maybe they sent letters and cards? I hope so. I'd like to think it's the formula for any happy relation. Well, at any rate, I suppose the moral of the story is it's never too late to find happiness. :)

You know what is even better than letters...

... PACKAGES! I mean, what is more joyful than receiving stuff and a card/letter? Especially when you don't know what's in it. I love going to my mail box and picking up a package slip and thinking, "Whoa, where did this come from?" It's a completely awesome feeling, and the packages themselves are seriously wonderful. This is one I got just recently from a friend in California. She sent me a sweater, shorts and a pair of shoes, and if there was ever a time to feel loved, it was in receiving that package. It had travelled all the way across the country, nineteen stamps on it's back, just so it could be with me! Now, I think that's sealed with love. :)

It's what's on the inside that counts...

...which is not only a great saying for day to day, but also, rather wonderfully, applies to cards. I mean, it's all about the message. Or the hilarious things you get with the message...

So, this came with a Valentine's Day card from a friend. Apparently there were no cut-out letters that spell my name, or her name, so instead I got "To: you, From: Wee Moo." At the very least, it was memorable. And moderately hilarious.
Another time, I got a card with this inside. (Evidently this was just post-Beijing Olympics, and we were all riding the Michael Phelps wave). This came after I had sent my friend a package packed with magazines on which Michael Phelps was features, complete with lovely comments about their future life together. It was entirely creepy and 100% entertaining.
A magazine clipping stuck into a card--now, this is just sweet. There's not much else to it. It kind of makes me want to fly. :)

Wandering thoughts...

I think one of the sweetest things is to have someone send you a postcard--because it means they thought of you, even for a brief moment while they were off having marvelous fun. The messages are always so happy (who doesn't have an awesome time wandering about the globe??), the postage stamps are awesome, and the thought is sincere. So here's to postcards!

From Scripps College, California. Ok, so my friend wasn't on holiday when she sent this (she was at school), but I think it's a cute postcard. I mean, who doesn't want impeccably dressed men from the 50's standing outside their balconies (complete with vines and shuttered windows)? Sigh.
Marstrand, Sweden. Apparently the town is populated with cute blue-eyed, blonde men. I've never been to this particular town in Sweden, but I find this holds true throughout the country, so naturally I was a little bit jealous upon receiving this card. Must make a note to hit up Marstrand next time I'm parusing through Sweden.
Sadly, I don't remember what this place is called. But it is the very tip of England. And apparently it is 12000 miles (or kilometers? Who knows.) from Australia. So I suppose that is pretty cool. In general, England is a pretty cool place, with pretty cool postcards, so I always love getting them! But honestly, who really cares where it came from because what's better than looking your mail box and finding you've got something that travelled miles and miles to be with you?

Randoms

Random cards are the best, because you receive them for nothing other than pure silliness. For me, it's even more fun when I find a card in the mail I wasn't expecting, that comes completely out of the blue on a Tuesday in the middle of November. It makes the trek to the mailroom completely worth it in the -12 weather! And it never fails to make me smile, especially when it's card as random and giggle-worthy as some of these...

Frida. I feel like she's pretty appropriate for a random card. Can you imagine opening this on a particularly cold and horrible Tuesday? I had a fun time puzzling over exactly what the caption meant for a while (I'm a little slow on the uptake haha) when I first got it in the mail.
An Edward Monkton! He is my favourite, truly. He's almost epic as Dr. Seuss with his simple and silly, but prolific cards. (Ok, so this one isn't so prolific, but honestly, deep or not, how can you not enjoy the Penguin of Death? Once, my friend and I actually tried to think of 412 different ways a Penguin of Death could actually kill you. It was moderately morbid and a good laugh--we think we only made it to 20 before we had to quit) You should definitely check out his website ... and his other merchandise (of which I own much ... pencil cases, luggage tags, pens, stuffies, calendars--it's just all so wonderful). http://www.edwardmonkton.com/
I saw this card in Hong Kong when I went to visit a friend last summer, and was completely in love with it. Lo and behold, it appeared in the mail a little while after I left! I think it's worth a giggle. :)
